5083 H131 Aluminum Plate

5083-H131 is a non-heat-treatable, cold-worked aluminum-magnesium alloy (AA5083), supplied in the H131 "marine/military" temper. It combines one of the highest strength levels among the 5000 series (thanks to extensive cold working) with superior general and seawater corrosion resistance compared to standard H32 or H116 tempers, excellent low-temperature performance, and outstanding ballistic properties. Typical applications include naval and commercial shipbuilding, pressure vessels, cryogenic storage tanks, and armor plates for military vehicles. All applications conform to strict standards such as ASTM B928M, MIL-DTL-46027, and various classification society specifications.

5083 H131 Aluminum Plate Alloy Composition

AA5083 is alloyed primarily with magnesium (4.0–4.9%), manganese (0.4–1.0%), and trace chromium (0.05–0.25%), plus minor amounts of silicon, iron, copper, zinc, titanium, and other elements . The high Mg content imparts extraordinary strength through strain hardening, while Mn and Cr improve resistance to grain-boundary corrosion and control grain structure during rolling .

Temper Designation: H131

H131 Temper: Belongs to the strain-hardened (H1 series) processing category. The number "31" indicates a specific level of hardening and process control, distinguishing it from similar tempers such as H112 and H116.

The "H131" temper indicates:

  • "H1" – strain hardened, without any subsequent thermal treatment.
  • "31" – a special stabilization treatment tailored for marine and defense use, achieving strength similar to H32/H116 but with enhanced toughness and ballistic resistance .

Compared to 5083-H32 (¼-hard), the H131 temper undergoes additional processing to ensure stable mechanical properties under cyclic loading and impact.

5083-H131 achieves a balance between strength and practicality through optimized strain-hardening processes, making it an important material choice for high-end fields such as military and marine industries.

5083 H131 Aluminum Plate Mechanical Properties

Typical mechanical properties of 5083-H131 plate (at room temperature) are as follows:

  • Tensile Strength: ~305–385 MPa
  • Yield Strength (0.2% offset): ≥215 MPa
  • Elongation: ≥10–12% (depending on plate thickness)

These values make 5083-H131 one of the highest-strength alloys in the 5000 series, suitable for load-bearing and structurally demanding environments.

5083 H131 Aluminum Plate Corrosion Resistance

Due to its high magnesium (Mg) content and controlled impurity levels, 5083-H131 exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance in marine environments and seawater. However, due to susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking, its usage temperature is limited to ~65°C, and the cold-working hardness is limited to approximately ¼ hard.

5083 H131 Aluminum Plate Fabrication and Welding

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using GMAW, GTAW, and other common methods; recommended filler alloy includes 5183. Note that welding H131 plates locally reduces the strength in the heat-affected zone.
  • Forming: Despite its high strength, it retains good formability and ductility; suitable for bending, rolling, and deep-drawing operations when using proper tools and processes.

5083 H131 Aluminum Plate Applications

  • Marine Structures: Hull plates, decks, superstructures, and piping systems for ships and offshore platforms.
  • Pressure Vessels and Cryogenic Equipment: Storage tanks for LNG, LPG, and other cryogenic liquids, where low-temperature toughness is critical.
  • Defense and Armor: Bulletproof and blast-resistant plates for military vehicles and protective barriers, compliant with MIL-DTL-46027 and NATO standards.

Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering

Extensively used in hulls, deck structures, and LNG carriers; seawater corrosion resistance and weldability are its core advantages.

Military Armor

As an armored ballistic material, 5083-H131 passes the U.S. Army ballistic resistance test (V50 standard), offering better protection than traditional magnesium alloys at the same weight.

Transportation and Industry

Suitable for aircraft fuel tanks, tanker trucks, pressure vessels, combining safety with ease of processing.

5083 H131 Aluminum Plate Compliance and Standards

  • ASTM B209M / ASME SB209: General specifications for aluminum plates and sheets, defining H32 and similar tempers.
  • ASTM B928M: "Marine" specification requiring rigorous intergranular corrosion and exfoliation corrosion tests for H116 and H321 tempers; H131 meets or exceeds these standards for naval applications.
  • MIL-DTL-46027: U.S. military detailed specification for armor plates, covering alloy, temper, ballistic performance, and quality assurance.
  • Classification Societies (DNV, Lloyd’s, ABS): Approves plates used in shipbuilding and requires additional testing per classification rules.

5083 H131 Aluminum Plate Manufacturing Considerations

  • Machining: As H131 is in a strain-hardened state, sharp tools and adequate cooling are required.
  • Forming: Moderate formability; avoid excessive bending to prevent cracking.
  • Heat Treatment: Due to the stability of H131, post-manufacturing heat treatment is generally not required.

Advantages of 5083 H131 Aluminum Plate Compared to Other Tempers

  • H131 vs. H116: Balances strength and formability, while H116 prioritizes corrosion resistance.
  • H131 vs. O Temper: Higher strength than annealed (O) temper, but lower ductility.

Limitations of 5083 H131 Aluminum Plate

  • Higher cost compared to 5xxx series alloys with lower magnesium content.
  • Lower ductility compared to softer tempers (e.g., H111).

5083 H131 aluminum plate is a high-performance material optimized for applications that demand high strength, weldability, and corrosion resistance. Its strain-hardened H131 temper provides a strategic balance for marine, transportation, and industrial uses, while meeting stringent international standards.
